Volunteer Information for College Students
College students are encouraged to seek career exploration through volunteer work with the St. John Auxiliary. Students are required to complete 100 hours of service before verification of hours or a reference is provided. Volunteering in a hospital setting involves purchase of a uniform, attendance at orientation, background screening, reference check, proof of current immunizations and TB testing, all of which are done to insure the very best care for our patients.

Volunteer Opportunities

It’s the best unpaid job you’ll ever have. The descriptions below represent volunteer opportunities in more than 40 different departments. Help us find one that’s right for you.

Clerical/Office Assistance. In the recovery rooms, pre-admissions testing, business office, regional radiology, endoscopy, diabetes center and womens’ center there are opportunities for volunteers who are organized, self-motivated and don’t mind a bit of paperwork. No computer skills needed. Monday through Friday, regular business hours.

Admissions/Dismissals. Join this active group of volunteers who work with our admissions department and the transportation services to welcome and transport patients. Plenty of camaraderie characterizes this very helpful group. Volunteers are needed Monday through Saturday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Guest Services. From the information desk in the main lobby to the heart cath lab, and the intensive care unit waiting room to the Center for Women’s Health, volunteers direct visitors and provide assistance to our patients and their families. Some areas need light computer skills. All areas require a good listening ear and a love of people. Primarily Monday through Friday, early morning through 4 p.m. Guest services volunteers are also needed weekday evenings and weekends.

Gift Shops. The Auxiliary’s gift shops are its largest fundraising project. Primarily through the proceeds of the shops, a $2 million pledge to purchase digital mammography equipment is underway. With the help of gift shop volunteers, past projects have funded St. John’s Wayfinding hospital information centers, building expansion and new technology for the health system. If you like people, love to check out new merchandise and can handle a cash register, the gift shop may be a place for you. Volunteers are needed seven days a week in four-hour shifts. The St. John Medical Center gift shop is open from 8:30 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday through Friday and on the weekends from noon to 4 p.m. We also have opportunities at the St. John Owasso Gift Shop.

Emergency Department TLC Volunteers. Like being active and good at working with people under stress? Working with our patients and their families in the emergency department may be the right spot for you. Volunteers help with admission paperwork, provide blankets and meals, and listen to patient’s families. This is an on-the-go, 24/7 volunteer position, holiday, evening and weekend help is always needed. This is a great opportunity for working folks and college students.

Volunteer Visitors. Providing companionship for patients, relieving family members so they can have a meal or a break - that's what our volunteer visitors do. Volunteers attend special training and mentoring sessions and are assigned to specific units to get to know staff and to visit patients. Volunteer have flexible hours, making it well suited for people with midday, early evening and weekend availability.

Delivery Volunteers. Monday through Friday morning, mail volunteers deliver cards and e-mail greetings to patients throughout the facility. Each weekday afternoon, flower volunteers work as a team to deliver flowers to patients.

Community Service Volunteers. As a supplement to our regular volunteer work, Auxiliary members venture out to help with one-time special events, blood drives, classes and fundraising events. This is a nice way to get to know other members outside your regular volunteer commitment.

Hospice. Through St. John Home Health and Hospice, volunteers are trained to assist families in their homes with the final days for their loved ones. Volunteers deliver medical supplies, sit with patients, do household chores and become a friend to families during this critical time. Special training is offered several times a year. Behind the Scenes Gift Shop.
Taking inventory, marking merchandise, dusting, re-stocking and help with displays are all part of the behind-the-scenes projects for our gift shop. If you prefer to remain in the background, this may be the perfect way to help. Monday through Friday, four-hour shifts during the day.
